Annual Open Exhibition 2019


The South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts invites all local, national and international fine and applied artists to enter the 2019 Open Exhibition to be held at Exeter Castle, Devon, UK between 12th-23rd November 2019. Judges will be looking for a diversity of styles and techniques and this year there will be a dedicated exhibition space for 3D work: sculptures and installations. Sponsored prizes and awards.

Please note that you will be notified by e-mail if your work has sold at the exhibition. If you have not received an e-mail then please ensure that you collect your work on Sunday 24th November 2019 between 10.30 and 2.30pm. There is no storage facility at The Castle.

Exhibition Entry Information


General Information
The exhibition will be held at The Exeter Castle, Castle Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3PU

Eligibility
Submissions of work are invited from visual and applied artists working in any medium. Please see restrictions listed under Exhibition Details.

The Ballroom Gallery will be exhibiting 3D work: sculptures and installations. Please note, there is no flat access to the Ballroom and so any 3D work must be easily portable. It will be the responsibility of the artist to deliver the work directly into the Ballroom via several steps with a small ramp.

Submission Procedure
Submission is by online entry only. You can enter up to 4 works (please refer to Artwork details under Exhibition Details below). The Selection Panel may select up to a maximum of 4 works per artist. 

Restrictions

All 2D work must be framed.

  • Painting - maximum size 1 metre in any direction including frame (for abstract work TOP should be clearly marked on the reverse).
  • Drawing - as above
  • Photography - as above
  • Original Print - as above
  • Sculpture - Works must be portable and structurally sound. Works must not be so fragile or unstable that they cannot be safely moved and displayed. Artists must supply their own plinths.
  • Mixed Media  -  As other 2D work
  • Ceramics - small collections of work in a series (up to 3 pieces) will count as one item. Ceramics should be delivered in a suitable container and boxes should be provided for items sold.
  • Jewellery - small collections of work in a series (up to 3 items) will count as one item. Jewellery should be delivered in a suitable container and boxes should be provided for items sold.
  • Glass - small collections of work in a series (up to 3 items) will count as one item. Glass should be delivered in a suitable container and boxes should be provided for sold items.
  • Textiles - Works should be supplied with relevant means by which they can be securely attached to a wall. TOP should be clearly marked.


Image Uploads
Image files should be JPG or PNG and no more than 5MB large. Upload time will depend on your internet connection speed so please be patient. If you are having problems uploading your images please use image editing software to resize your image to approximately 1600 pixels wide and then save as a new file. Image file names should not be too long and should not contain any invalid characters such as ' " & % * ( ) < > / \ ~ # + =

Pricing
Work selected for exhibition will be expected to be for sale with a minimum sale price of £200 or £125 for original prints. SWAc commission is charged at 35%. It will be assumed that the sale price includes the cost of any frame and our commission. Please allow for these points when pricing your work. Prices should include VAT if applicable. If you are VAT registered, please provide a VAT number in the box provided. 

Communications
All selection communication will be posted on-line via this entry system.  Applicants will be required to login to see if they have been selected and will be asked to download and print their application details to be delivered with the artwork. Failure to do so could result in work being withdrawn from the exhibition. Please make a note of your login-details and password. You must login from Monday 14th October 2019 to see if you have been selected.

SWAc will e-mail or telephone you if your work has sold.
 

Selection
The Selection Panel will select the works for the exhibition. The Selectors will consider all correctly completed submissions. The decision of the Selectors on all matters is final and no correspondence will be entered into. You must login from Monday 14th October 2019 to see if you have been selected.

Insurance
Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. All works accepted for exhibition will be displayed entirely at the artist's risk. Neither SWAc or The Castle venue will accept liability for loss or damage occurring during the exhibition.

Delivery and Collection

Delivery to Exeter Castle, Castle Street, Exeter, Devon EX4 3PU between 10.30 and 3.00pm on Sunday 10th November 2019.

Please attach D rings to all 2D work. All selected work should be clearly labelled. Please make your own two labels from card with your name, title of the work, medium, dimensions (cm) and sale price (to include SWAc's 35% commission and VAT if applicable). Stick one label to the back of 2D work or underneath 3D work and attach the second label to a piece of string 30cm in length and attach to the top back of 2D work or to a secure place for 3D work. The Castle can be found behind the High Street a short distance from Boots the Chemist and just around the corner from Pret a Manger.
Please use the nearby City Car Parks as vehicle access to the Castle Grounds is strictly reserved for disabled visitors.
The following car parks are extremely close by (5 mins walking distance): King William, John Lewis, Princesshay 1, 2 and 3.

Artists are responsible for the delivery and collection of their work to the Castle. All packaging materials must be removed after delivery (no storage is available for this) and brought back at collection. Stiffy bags are ideal for ease of delivery for 2-D work. If you are applying from overseas, please consider how you will get your work to and from the exhibition at the required times.

Unsold work must be collected on Sunday 24th November 2019 between 10.30 and 3.00pm. I understand that I will be informed if my work has sold. There is no storage facility at the Castle.
 

Work not collected at the stated times will be subject to a daily charge of £20 and will be disposed of after one week. 

Agreement
By submitting to the exhibition you are deemed to accept and agree to the following:
The decision of the Selectors on all matters is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
I understand that SWAc reserves the right to make such changes to the exhibition arrangements and these Terms and Conditions as may be deemed necessary by circumstances.
I authorise SWAc to process, store, and utilise the data in my submission and agree that, if selected for exhibition, images of my work can be freely used by SWAc, the Castle and associated organisations for promotional and publicity purposes for the exhibition.
 

I agree to deliver and collect my work on the specified dates.

I understand that the work remains at all times the liability of the artist. While every care will be taken when handling works of art, SWAc and The Castle cannot accept liability for any damage. 

 I confirm that all information provided by me is true and accurate and that the work submitted is wholly of my own creation. 
I have read and understood these terms and conditions and by submitting this application I accept and agree to observe all the Terms and Conditions therein.
